Chapter Seven

Take the day off.

That’s what the brief says. I stand there, in my t-shirt and underwear, my hair a fluffy black halo around my head, and read it again.

Take the day off.

“Take the day off?” I ask the piece of paper out loud. As if it can explain things to me. I shake my head, unnerved by this sudden shift in events. Finally, I shrug into a dress and boots and head down to Adrienne’s room.

It turns out that she is very sick. She looks horrible.

“You look horrible,” I tell her.

“Thank you.”

I tell her there’s no brief and give her the remote control and, while I’m spritzing my hands with sanitizer spray, she tells me to have a good day.

I think, suddenly, that this sounds like an excellent idea. I tell her that maybe I could have a date but it’s clear she senses that I’m nervous.

“With all the romance you read?” she asks.

“Reading is one thing.”

For all the happy endings I’ve read, all the insta-loves and slow burns, all the grumpy-guses paired with sunshine sweethearts, all the damsels paired with reformed rakes and rogues, all the bad boy biker billionaires and the myriad women who love them… none of it has really prepared me for a date.

Sex? Yes. Dinner and a movie? No.

“Maya,” she scratches out, “just be your wonderful self. Be honest.”

I nod in spite of the fact that I am absolutely certain this is terrible advice. Still, Adrienne is a woman of the world. A normal woman. A woman who understands herself and society and her place in things and… she likes me.

I take a deep breath and head down to breakfast where I text Cole.

Maya: Mr. Godwin gave us the day off.

Cole: That’s great.

I type ‘I thought we could hang out.’ But then delete it. I try again and type ‘Maybe we could have a date.’ Then delete that, too.

“Hey, gorgeous!” I turn to see Rei Silva eating bacon straight out of the buffet platter even as she puts a biscuit onto her plate.

“Oh, hello!” I say.

“What’s going on? You sexting?” she asks, sitting down in front of me. My table is next to the window. The day looks beautiful. Sunny and warm. But I sigh and put my phone down.

“We have the day off,” I say, as if this explains everything.

I’m surprised when Rei nods as if it really does.

“And you wanna bone. But you don’t have the hookup.”

“No, I have the… hookup,” I manage.

I watch her smoosh some bacon on to half a biscuit and swipe it through a blob of grape jelly.

“Okay. So what's the problem, hot stuff? Is it that hunky Samoan dude you were tongue banging in here the other night?”

I nod.

“Shit. You ain’t tapped that yet?”

“I… well, not really.”

“Well, we have a whole day, Maya. But don’t sit here the whole time trying to figure out the perfect phrase for ‘wanna bone’. I’d bone you and you wouldn’t even have to ask.”

“Thanks,” I say and I mean it. I would bone Rei, too.
